I didn't think the Black Candle Makers Club could top itself from last year, but this year’s H-Town Showdown in Houston was quite the exception. From the moment I walked into the room, I could already feel the energy — that mix of excitement, nerves, and community that only comes from being surrounded by people who are enduring the same entrepreneurial journey.
Thursday: Touchdown in H-Town

I decided to stay at a nearby hotel instead of the host location( for those interested they typically provide group discounts, but I like my loyalty points). Once checked in, I put on my rodeo-inspired outfit (this year's theme) and headed to the conference.
As soon as I walked in, I could hear the music and feel the vibes. The hosts greeted us with their signature warmth and, of course, the goody bags — if you know, you know. From fragrance oil samples, candle warmers, snacks, drinks, and candle tools, lets just say I was so glad I left extra room in my suitcase.
The first keynote was from Angela Brock of Hello Breakthrough, who set the tone with powerful financial wisdom. Then came the Men in Fragrance panel featuring Mr. Cologne, Sex & Candles, and Regular Ass Candles — refreshing perspectives from men in an industry that’s still mostly women-led. I networked a bit, but this introvert retreated to her room afterward to recharge for the morning.
Friday: Southern Hospitality & Scent Memories
Friday morning started with one of my favorite parts of the weekend — the Simply Scents Candle shop tour hosted by BCMC Ambassador, CEO Shan. She's always so down to earth and relatable. ; she served breakfast and coffee while walking us through her operation and answering all of our questions. She's a legend in this industry and such an inspiration, so it was a pleasure to see her business up close and personal.
After the tour, we browsed vendors and had the chance to make our own perfume with Black Phlox, another Houston-based candle brand. I heard their game night later that evening was a hit — I missed it, but if you’re ever in Houston, check them out!
Saturday: The Main Event
Saturday was the day I’d been waiting for — back-to-back keynotes, powerhouse speakers, and a Rodeo-themed Candle Ball to end the night.
CEO Shan opened the morning with her signature real talk — transparent, inspiring, and full of gems. She’s one of those leaders who makes you feel seen. I also got to meet her again (we met at last year's candle conference) and gifted her one of my candles.
Next up was the President of Makesy, one of my go-to suppliers. Hearing her perspective on building relationships with your suppliers really stuck with me — it’s something I plan to nurture even more (hey, Charlotte)!

Then came the speaker I was personally most excited for: The Seven Figure Spa Chick (formerly Six Figure Spa Chick). As someone whose long-term goal is to open a spa, I was all ears. Her session was overflowing with practical advice, resources, and motivation. Her insight and energy shifted the room. You can tell why she's got to where she is now, a true boss, and I'm grateful to her for pouring into us.
To close the day, Yandy Smith-Harris, founder of Yelle Skincare and fellow Howard alumna (HU, you know!) took the stage. I even got to ask her a question about how Howard shaped her journey — which she recorded and featured on her Instagram :). She's a sweetheart in person, and I really appreciated her sharing her journey with us. Later that night at the Candle Ball, we snapped a photo together, and it honestly made my night.
That evening’s Rodeo-themed Candle Ball was the perfect finale. Awards, line dancing, food, a bar, and yes — a mechanical bull. I even entered (well, was forced into) the Best Dressed competition and placed 2nd ( I guess I'll take it.) And earlier that day, something special happened: Jewelz, my BCMC coach, was officially recognized by the City of Houston. September 27th is now Black Candle Makers Club Day — a huge win for our community and making the day even more special.

Sunday: Brunch, Business, and Big Lessons
Sunday wrapped up with a beautiful brunch at Late August, and the food was fire. Our final keynote, Joi Lyn Hunt, broke down some key business structure tips and how to protect your brand. As creatives, that’s an area we often overlook. I did note that many of her points were things I’ve already implemented — shoutout to that Howard University business degree 😉.
The day also featured the Pitch Competition, and although I didn’t compete this year, I took it as divine timing. Watching from the audience gave me clarity on what I need to refine for next year — my pitch, my confidence, and my delivery. Sometimes sitting back and learning is the most powerful move you can make.
Final Thoughts
This weekend reminded me why I fell in love with this community in the first place. Seeing so many of us Black candle makers, entrepreneurs, and creatives in one room — supporting, teaching, and celebrating each other — is truly special.
I left Houston with new inspiration, deeper connections, and a clear vision of where I want to go next. My deposit for next year’s Atlanta conference is already in. I’ve got a year to grow my business, craft my pitch, and come back swinging — because this weekend reignited a flame I didn’t even know had dimmed (pun intended).
If you’re in the fragrance, beauty, or candle industry, I can’t recommend the BCMC community enough. From the University, to their cohorts and conferences, you won't regret it.
